Shared Heritage. Trans- and Intercultural Heritage in the Euro-Afro-Mediterranean Area

Stuttgart, Institute for Auslandsbeziehungen (ifa), Charlottenplatz 17, January 25 - January 26, 2018

Argument of the Conference
In recent years, the question of the common cultural heritage has continued to be at the heart of the concerns of the Euro-Mediterranean and international community in the context of globalization with its corollaries of cultural standardization, but also of the resurgence of identity crises and religious misunderstandings.
The Alhambra - Arab or European heritage? Timbuktu - heritage of Africa and at the same time European myth? Goethe, The 'Western-Eastern Divan' - legacy of Europe, but not of the East? Many ancient monuments and historic cities, many literary and artistic works are part of the memories of many cultures. They share this heritage. They share this heritage. Shared Heritage - "Sharing heritage" - is also the title that has been chosen for the European Year of Heritage 2018.1 This refers to the cultural heritage of Europe which is common to Europeans, in its diversity, with its intercultural connections and with regard to its development so important for a cultural policy of Europe.
The following topics are planned:
1- European Heritage Year 2018 and its concept
2- The Euro-Afro-Mediterranean area, shared heritage and perspectives of its preservation through common development
3- Common heritage in the context of Euro-Afro-Mediterranean migration and mobility
4- Shared Heritage: Memory and Education in the Euro-Afro-Mediterranean Area
5- How to act? Perspectives for a 'shared' heritage policy in the Euro-Afro-Mediterranean zone

UNESCO, Europe and the safeguarding of Mediterranean heritage

Issues and perspectives of the North / South partnership
Dr. Mohieddine HADHRI

This paper proposes to shed some light on the "shared heritage" which today constitutes a new vision devoted by UNESCO to the cultural heritage of humanity. At the beginning of the century, faced with the multifaceted challenges of globalization (the advent of mass tourism, the return of populism and religious misunderstandings, the specter of wars and violence) UNESCO as well as Europe are called more than ever to engage in an active North / South partnership strategy, particularly in the Mediterranean. This subject will be evoked through three axes of reflections namely:
1) UNESCO and Heritage share in the Mediterranean
2) Europe and the safeguarding of Mediterranean heritage
3) The European Architectural Heritage in North Africa: Challenges and Perspectives of the North / South Partnership in the Mediterranean

Tribute to Professor Bernd Thum, Founding President of the Europe-Mediterranean Knowledge Foundation, WEM, who died on 18 June 2018

It was with great sadness and sorrow that we learned on June 18, 2018, the news of the death of Prof. Dr. Bernd Thum, which deeply shocked us. His disappearance represents a great loss of a personal friend for nearly twenty years, but also for his friends both in Germany and here in Tunisia and more widely in the Maghreb. Personally, I keep him an unforgettable memory, that of an academician of great talent but also a humanist of great sincerity who has contributed so much to the cultural rapprochement between the elites of countries on both shores of the Mediterranean.
It should be remembered that the regret has made a strong commitment and has campaigned for years to promote contacts and relations of friendship and cooperation between academicians, civil society actors and more widely between all the peoples on both sides of the world. the Mediterranean . His dream was to see a real cultural dialogue between North and South, between East and West, as the only lifeline at the beginning of the century, in the face of the multifaceted challenges of globalization with the advent of a mass tourism, the return of populism and religious misunderstandings, the specter of wars and violence
The Heidelberg and Stuttgart Conferences of 23-26 January 2018 on "Heritage Sharing" were his ultimate struggle to serve these noble ideals of tolerance, peace and fraternity among men at a particularly critical moment in relations between Europeans. and Arabs mark Alas! everywhere by the resurgence of the old demons of extremism, fanaticism and xenophobia. As such, Mr Thum deserves all our respect will not be forgotten. He will remain in our memories as one of the great friends of Tunisia, the Maghreb and the Mediterranean.
May God allow him to rest in peace!
