“The Mediterranean, A bridge between Orient and Occident : Itineraries, dynamics and transfers of trans-mediterranean knowledge “

This paper focuses on the historical processes , itineraries and dynamics through which knowledge and sciences were translated, copied and transferred into European continent and explores the different channels of knowledge set up in the Mediterranean area since the Ancient times , Middle Ages and Modern and contemporary centuries .
In his presentation, Dr Hadhri outlined the fact that the European Renaissance owes a debt to the Muslims who not only preserved Greek achievements , but also corrected where applicable , and advanced their theories to the benefit of Europe and modern world civilization. According to many eminent scholars , from the early 9th to the late 14th century, the Arabs Muslims were probably the most learned people in the world. Their language has provided a great output in Literature, Philosophy Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Medicine, Engineering . Dr Hadhri noted further:
“ It is largely proved today by historians that the Modern European Renaissance has benefited from the Arab civilization and the fact that the Mediterranean area has constituted a large East-West platform to this process of transfer to European continent across a bridge built through the works of Arab scribes, working in libraries and schools from Iraq across North Africa to Sicily and Spain “
Dr hadhri has expressed his conviction that the Mediterranean area and more largely the Arab-European relations should be given nowadays a chance for a new deal of scientific cooperation and cultural understanding . He also pointed out that Qatar University is more and more involved in a large process of deepening scientific relations and networks with European universities including German universities.
Notably, one of the major objective of this conference of Rabat was the creation of a new international Foundation ”Knowledge Space Europe – Mediterranean ‘ dealing with scientific cooperation and cultural exchanges at the level of the Euro-mediterranean area, Near East and Sahel Africa. In this respect, the formation act has been accomplished on 26 th October 2010, confirming the birth of this new body called Knowledge Space Europe – Mediterranean. Dr Mohieddine Hadhri has been elected as a member of the Steering Committee composed of six representatives (Germany, France, Belgium, Qatar, Morocco and Tunisia )
Priority objective of the Foundation is the creation of a network of persons and institutions in the Euro-Mediterranean Area (in a wide sense), ready to work for the creation of a functional’ space of densified cultural interrelations and a shared knowledge .”
